HP LaserJet Pro M501: No Paper Pickup when there is paper in both cartridges

What is the fix for this?

Does the pickup roller actually rotate? Can you hear it and try to pick up the paper? Turn the printer around and look from the back into the tray, you will have to lift the cover and confirm that the paper actually lifts properly and that the roller is turning.
It could be a broken feed shaft or a damaged pickup roller.

Check for deterioration of the rubber on the main pickup roller (Replace if needed).

Ensure that the main paper pick up roller (view inside the printer from the priority input slot - use a torchlight) is rotating when the print command is given / 'check' button is pressed after the error message.

If the paper pickup roller does not rotate - a component in the gear train needs attention / replacement.
The gear train is behind the formatter inside the right side cover.
