HP LaserJet Pro M501: No Paper Pickup when there is paper in both cartridges

What is the fix for this?

Short summary:

  1. Turn the printer around and look from the back into the tray. Lift the cover to confirm that the paper lifts properly and that the roller is turning. Check if you can hear the roller and try to pick up the paper.
  2. If the pickup roller does not rotate, push the paper far inside or use the priority tray. If this does not work, check for deterioration of the rubber on the main pickup roller. If the rubber is in good shape, proceed to the next step.
  3. Check if the main paper pickup roller is rotating when the print command is given or when the 'check' button is pressed after the error message. You can view this from inside the printer through the priority input slot using a torchlight.
  4. If the roller is not moving, a component in the gear train needs attention or replacement. The gear train is located behind the formation inside the right side cover.

Does the pickup roller actually rotate? Can you hear it and try to pick up the paper? Turn the printer around and look from the back into the tray, you will have to lift the cover and confirm that the paper actually lifts properly and that the roller is turning.
It could be a broken feed shaft or a damaged pickup roller.
