First, let's check if the printer is set as the default.
To do that, please press the Windows key + I to open Settings, click Devices > Printers & scanners, select your printer, and click Open queue. Click Printer on the top toolbar and click Set As Default Printer. If you do not want Windows to manage your default printers, return to the Printers & scanners page and untick Allow Windows to manage my default printer.

Please follow these steps to power cycle your printer:
1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the
printer.
2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
3. Wait at least 1 minute.

4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
5. Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
6. Turn the printer on.

how do I prevent this from happening in the future

This problem should not occur in the future after troubleshooting if your printer is serviceable
