My husband sees the 0. It is where the number of messages shows.

I assume, that 0 is shown where there are no messages on your answering machine.
Usually, answering machine has no limit on the number of messages it will hold. However, un-played or saved messages are supposed only to remain in your machine for 30 days before the system automatically purges them.

Does a 0 show, ours does not

It should show up when there are no messages, or it doesn't show up at all when there are no messages
