I am thinking of going back to use my Google Pixel 3a phone for a little while (to save money and eventually pay cash for another phone next year)

I saw that they are no longer providing security updates and was wondering if I could purchase phone security like McAfee (or some other software, do you have any recommendations) and that would protect my phone from any vulnerabilities resulting from not getting the updates. Will that work? Thank you so much!

I assume that you can use any antivirus software that provides protection for Android.
There is a huge variety of them, the most popular are McAfee, Norton, TotalAV, BitDefender

So even though I won't be receiving security updates from the phone manufacturer, I will still be safe as long as I purchase it from one of those above?

Usually not receiving security updates from the phone manufacturer doesn't mean that paid antivirus services stop updating their antiviruses. I assume that you will be able to stay safe as long as you have an antivirus, however it also depends on you, sometimes only your attention can protect your device or account
