If your contacts' numbers are shown instead of their names, you might need to reset the WhatsApp sync with your contacts. To do so: Open your phone's Settings, then tap Users & accounts > WhatsApp.

To attach pictures to our chat, you need to press the paper clip button in the lower right corner of the chat window. Then you have either to choose an image on your device or take a photo right away. Then confirm sending.

Please make sure that that person is added to your phone contact list.

If that is the case, please do the following:
Press Contacts on the apps menu.
Press New contact or New.
Enter the contact's name and phone number > press SAVE.
The contact should automatically appear in your WhatsApp contact list. If the contact doesn't appear, open WhatsApp, then press New chat > Options > Reload contacts.
