i was told by microsoft that support for my 8.1 OS was about to stop, and they recommend to upgrade, so followed via interent the upgrade process, and it said unable to use this process

Support for Windows 8.1 is discontinued, but the software will continue to function. However, your computer running Windows 8.1 will no longer receive security updates.

To upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, open Media Creation Tool, select “Upgrade this PC now,” and click Install. Yes, you can still upgrade for free since the Windows 8.1 product key will activate Windows 10. Although files and apps will be preserved, you still want to create a backup of your computer.

the laptop is 9 years old but works well under the current OS, MS win said that it will allow an upgrade, I'm thinking of purchasing a windows 10 11 os but i dont want to waste my money if the Laptop is too old now? but looking at the spec its still well able to functio and ist far behind other new laptops in spec?

im concerned that if i go for a complete reinstall my problem could get worse as the Laptop doesnt have a CD drive so I would need to create usb install?

ill loose that as i cant find the licensing paperwork anymore (over ten years ago)
