On my new HP Laptop to write my email address I press shift2 and that shoulď gives @. But it gives me " instead. ??

This is a Mac which I have not used for 20 years. Though the command is no different for the email ampersand @. = shift2
What Mac types when you press shift2?

It is jumping all over on its own It seems. I have used UK. keyboard now will. Change to US again.
