I am not familiar with WhatsApp and I got through and entered my phone number and ticked the box down the bottom press save and nothing happened what have I done wrong

Could you follow this instruction:
- Open WhatsApp
- Click the chats tab.
- Tap the green circle with a messaging icon on the bottom right of your screen.
- Choose a contact from your list or click the magnifying glass icon and type the name of the person you want to message.
- Start chatting!

Now, please try the following:
- Open the app, and agree to WhatsApp's terms of service.
- Verify your phone number via text message.
- Pick a user name and profile picture.
- Wait for WhatsApp to finish setting up your account, and then tap Continue.

You can type in your name so that it will be easier for them to recognize you.
Do you suggest my real name or a substitute I opened it and have 23 people listed
