I have a pixel 6a, when I go into my messages and click on a conversation and open that up,at the top is 4-5 icons a on the top of the chat window

Oh, this is just a "Copy" icon.
So I clicked it. Does that copy it any where specific ?
It just copies the message that you choose.
Then you can paste it in another place.
Ok. So it’s not saved as an image anywhere for someone to see should they have my phone ? If I don’t paste it anywhere no one will see it ?

Yes, no one can see your copied message they can only see it if only you choose to send it to them.
