I have a Canon SX280HS which for some reasons, no matter how hard I try won't let me take any pictures.

The battery is full, I set the setting to Auto and I have tried every combination to press the shutter and take a picture.

Hello, thank you for using Howly.
Was the Canon SX280HS camera able to take pictures before?

It has been playing up for some time - and intermittent working... there are so many options on the camera - I wonder if there is a simple solution to unlock the problem
it has been able to take pictures before - of excellent quality.

Noted, thank you.
You don't see any errors on the display, correct?

Customer Replay

no

Got it, thank you. Can you tell me, what you have tried to do so far to fix the issue?

Customer Replay

I have gone through all the option through the menu without success.

Noted. How long ago have you updated the firmware?

Customer Replay

I haven't updated since I bought the camera - 4/5 years ago

Noted. Have you also checked your memory storage? Is it full?

Customer Replay

No lots of space

Thank you.
Can you please describe the process for me? When you try to take a picture, do you hear any sounds? Or indication, that the picture was taken but not saved?

Customer Replay

Very little sound - and then check the picture on the blue arrow button which takes me to my picture gallery

And it's not there?

Customer Replay

No when it works the pictures are there.

Got it. Do you have any pictures and data there at the moment that is not saved anywhere? I want you to perform a Factory reset, which will erase all current data on the camera, so please, let me know.

Customer Replay

It seems that the button that takes pictures may be jammed. No I'm happy to to let those on there be wiped - I have saved on my laptop the ones I want.

Jammed?
Let's do Factory Reset first. Please, follow this:

  1. Press the [MENU] button
  2. Move the zoom lever to choose the “Tools” tab, which is represented by a wrench and hammer icon
  3. Select [Reset All] and then press the [Func. Set] button
  4. A “Reset Settings to Default?” message appears. Highlight “OK” using the
directional buttons and then press “Func.Set” to select it and restore your camera’s factory settings.
  5. Turn off the camera and remove the battery pack.
  6. Allow the camera to remain without power for 30 seconds.
  7. Reinsert the button-sized lithium battery.
  8. Reinsert the battery pack.
  9. Turn on the camera.

Is everything clear with the provided instruction?

Customer Replay

thanks I will try this - might take me a bit of time. very grateful for your help. grateful.

Sure! Let me know if the issue will not be resolved. If you have a suspicion about the fact, that the button may be jammed, then the issue can't be resolved from your end. It's better to take the camera to the repair shop in such a case.

I’m glad I was able to get that sorted out for you. Before you go, is there anything else I can assist you with today?
