is there a way to lift the agitator so sheets can easily be removed?
Yes, you can remove the agitator by simply taking off the cup that holds the fabric softener, just pull upward if needed wiggle and pull. Under that you will see a raised plastic piece the raised plastic pc is pulled off by using a plier pull upward under this you will find a bolt 1/2 or 9/16 socket remove the bolt and pull out the agitator the same way by wiggling and pulling upward
I should only need to raise it.
I should only have to raise it enough to clear the sheets.

SO, I'm going to have to do this every time. Sounds like a flaw in the design.
I must admit, there are a lot of customers with the same issue. Currently, Kenmore does not provide any resolution for this problem for a long time.
