Will airpods automatically change from a WINDOWS laptop to an iphone if a call is received

No, unfortunately, Windows does not support automatic switching between devices, as Apple devices do.

Do you mean to have your headphones switch automatically between your Windows laptop and your iPhone?

Not necessarily, but is it complicated to take a call with the airpods still on

We are both mid 70ties and want to know how difficult it would be. Would we need to cancel the laptop connection and then connect to the iphone all whilst a the phone is ringing

Sorry, I'm not on my wife;s laptop and we have not bought the airpods yet. iIthought that you were just going to give me a list of instructions

Oh, of course.
To connect AirPods to a PC, put your AirPods in the case and press and hold the small button on the back until the status light starts blinking white. Your AirPods should then show up in the Add a device window in your PC's Bluetooth settings, where you can click to pair and connect.
