Let me give you brief instructions that could help you out:
1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes for the internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.
2. Open the back cover.
3. Pull the blue tabs at the left and right sides toward you to release the fuser cover.
4. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit.
5. Close the fuser cover.
6. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

There is only about a half inch of paper sticking out; I can't get a grip on it

Could you, please, turn off the printer and try again?

Turn printer off and try to grip the paper while it's off?

Correct.

No luck. The paper is deep inside the printer, barely protruding past the orange roller (fuser?)

I understand.
If the previous steps did not help, please try this now:
Open the front cover.
Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.
But please be careful, the machine's internal parts can be hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.
Then, Pull out the jammed paper slowly.
Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly into the machine and Close the front cover.
