My Kindle is fully charged and showing "Recommended for you" page

However will not respond at all to swiping

yes. Also rechaged is on another lead. The light changes from gold to green, but Kindle still doesn't respond.

Hmm, could you please try this way:
Press and hold the power button until either a power dialog box appears or the screen goes blank. Continue holding the power button for 40 seconds, then release.
