I was allocated to type closed captions for a large zoom meeting, using my new HP Pavilion computer which has windows 11

To my horror it was like typing through treacle, the keypad was very slow and I had to press enter more than once. I had to quickly move to a grotty old computer to get the job done. Any ideas?

Hello, thank you for using Howly. I’ll be happy to help you out! May I ask your name?

Nice to meet you, *****!

Cheers
Seems like the Zoom software isn't synchronised with my computer?

Could you please clarify, if you've been trying to add captions via these steps?

  1. In the meeting controls, next to the Show Captions option, click the up-caret and select the Show caption window option. This will open up the closed caption box.
  2. Type the closed captions in the box.
  3. Press Enter to submit your closed captions.
Customer Replay

Not exactly. The Zoom host made the box appear into which I type. I have done this many times and never had a problem before.
Let me clarify that what I was able to type did appear in the captions but so painfully slow that it was not practical to continue with this computer

So, the issue is that it is not saving every time and you have to type it in many times, right?

Customer Replay

It is more that there seemed to be something wrong with the keyboard, which had worked perfectly well for word processing and as I am writing to you now. Some letter appeared immediately, others I had to press more than once.
Same with the return key

I see, could you please clarify if it's clean and not damaged?

Customer Replay

Your description of how you type closed captions is rather strange. If I press 'show captions' I will just get the captions, as a consumer, not the power to write them.
I bought the computer the day before. It is pristine.
I keep telling you - I am a writer and it does perfectly until that moment

Yeah, about my instructions, you need to be a host in order to write captions in that way.

Customer Replay

The host sends the box to whichever participant has been selected to type next.
Yes, I understand what you mean, but I don't need to be a co-host. this is not that sort of problem, it must be software

What troubleshooting have you done so far?

Customer Replay

I rang my tech insurance people and they said it can't be anything to do with my new computer, it must be the Zoom software. Have you never heard of this sort of problem? I have to type again today so am eager to find a solution, otherwise it's back to the old laptop with the small screen.

Could you please clarify if the problem occurs only in Zoom?

Customer Replay

I have never typed closed captions in anything other than Zoom so not sure what you mean. There is certainly no problem with emailing and word processing.

Could you please clarify if the problem occurred when you were using the Zoom chat? Just want to be sure that the problem is with captions, not the whole Zoom app.

Customer Replay

Good question. I am not sure whether I did use the Zoom chat on that occasion. I think I didn't.
What I could do is set up a quick Zoom call this morning to see whether the chat function works ok

Please, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
  2. Click the Home tab.
  3. Click New Meeting to start an instant meeting.
Customer Replay

but what is the address of this instant meeting? don't I have to put in an address, a link?

Usually, it uses your personal meeting ID if you create a meeting in this way. So, you don't have to put it in

Customer Replay

ok I am in my own zoom room

Great! Please check if all keys are working in the chat.

Customer Replay

No problems

Great!
Let's check if the closed captions work fine
Please follow these steps:

  1. In the host controls, click More, then click Captions.
  2. Under Host controls, click Set up manual captioner.
  3. Under Enable manual captioner, click the On option.
  4. In the same menu, select "I will type"

Is everything clear with the provided instruction?

Customer Replay

I can't find Captions. wht are host controls? I am the host, and there are options about muting participants, providing a waiting room etc but no mention of captions

Got you
In the navigation menu, click Room Management then Zoom Rooms. Click Edit next to the Zoom Room you want to enable closed captioning for. Click the Meeting tab. Under In Meeting toggle to enable or disable them

Customer Replay

Where is the Navigation menu? Do you mean I should go back to my own home profile etc page? there is nothing i can find labelled Navigation menu in the zoom room itself.

In zoom app
Following way:

  1. Start the Zoom meeting or webinar that you are hosting.
  2. In the host controls, click Moremore-button__1_.png, then click Captions.
  3. Under Host controls, click Set up manual captioner.
  4. Under Enable manual captioner, click the On option.
  5. In the same menu, select one of the following options:

Assign a participant to type: Assigns a participant to type closed captions during the meeting.
I will type: Opens the closed captioning window for you to manually type closed captions.

Customer Replay

had to go through several passwords, nearly there

Got it, please, let me know how everything is going.

Customer Replay

I went into my zoom app, found 'enable manual captioner' and clicked on. But there were no options as you describe. It simply said Manual captions

Allow the host to type closed captions or assign a participant/3rd-party service to add closed captions
Modified
Allow the host to type or assign a participant to type
Allow use of caption API Token to integrate with 3rd-party Closed

Customer Replay

no option 'I will type'

I see, the names might vary from update to update. We need "Allow host to type or assign a participant to type"

Customer Replay

I have switched that on. I will now go back to the zoom room and attempt to type.

Great! Please, keep me posted

Customer Replay

No option for captions appears under the host controls. Maybe I need to reopen the room since it was still open when I changed the settings. I will try that now

Yes, please

Customer Replay

It worked. And what is more, I could type them easily. I couldn't see them separately from the window into which I was typing... this is the oddest thing.

Seems like the last time there was some error, if it will appear again, restart the Zoom app.

Customer Replay

It was a nightmare yesterday. I just have to hope it won't happen today, that it isn't something to do with what the zoom tech team are doing.. but that seems unlikely. Thanks for your help

You're very welcome, *****!
Is there anything else I can do for you today?

Customer Replay

No thanks. I better go to the gym since I will be on Zoom for 8 hours later! Bye bye and thanks
